50 Year Tornado Rememberance

Update: Due to the soggy forecast for Wednesday, we will be moving this event to the West Bays at City Hall (the old Fire Station).

The Monticello community will join together in remembrance on Wednesday, April 3 at 5:17 pm to mark 50 years since the tornado carved a destructive path through the city and surrounding areas. Join the Streets of Monticello Association (S.O.M.A.) and the City of Monticello at the tornado memorial located at the corner of Bluff and Broadway Streets to commemorate the event with a dedication of a new sign.

Featured speakers will share their own memories of the tornado and we encourage community members to share as well. Activities will include a presentation, visuals of the city destruction, and a STEM project for children, provided by the Twin Lakes Science teachers. Using historical photographs, retrace how the face of Monticello was permanently altered by the Tornado. Take a walking tour of city landmarks to visualize how our downtown changed following the events of April 3, 1974.

You can find more information on the event through social media and web pages for SOMA, the City of Monticello, and the Monticello-Union Township Public Library.
